ESCORT COURSES:

Q1: What is an Escort Vehicle? An escort vehicle is a powered wheeled conveyance used to accompany and guide trucks with oversized loads. This vehicle is referred to as flag or pilot cars.

Q2: What is an Escort Vehicle Driver? An escort driver is the motorist who is operating the escort vehicle. There may be one or more persons who are accompanying the truck to its final destination.

Q3:  What is the Purpose or Reason for having an Escort Vehicle? The escort vehicle provides benefits to every driver on the road. This enhances the safety of the truck driver as well as the public drivers. It serves as a warning to the public drivers to be aware of the magnitude of the trucks load size. It also decreases the inconveniences to the normal flow in traffic and helps prevent any damage to the loads.

Q4:  How many Escort Vehicles are there and what are the responsibilities of an Escort driver? There can be one or more escort vehicles. For example, a truck may have two escort vehicles present. One vehicle may be ahead of the truck and the other escort vehicle can be in the rear of the truck, such as in the picture above. An escort driver is responsible for the overall transport of the load. It’s important for the escort driver or drivers to be attentive constantly in order to expect in advance potential problems and escape the difficulties. This job requires specific skills to increase the safety of the load.

Q5: What is the purpose of requiring the eight-hour training program? The escort education program teaches potential escort drivers the fundamentals for managing escort vehicle operations in a safe and professional way.

Q6: Why is the escort vehicle driver certification not included on the driver's license? Why is there no picture on the escort vehicle driver certification card?  The driver's license is proof that a driver is able to operate a vehicle in the Commonwealth of Virginia. But, it was determined that a different certification card would be used to show that additional requirements for becoming an escort vehicle driver have been met.

Q7: How long does a Virginia escort vehicle driver certification last? The certificate is legally effective for 5 years and will terminate on the last day of the month that it was issued. For instance, if your certification was issued March 1, your certification will expire in five years on March 31st.

Q8: What should I do if my escort vehicle driver certification card is lost, stolen or destroyed?  In order to obtain a replacement escort vehicle driver certification card, fill out the "Escort Vehicle Driver Certification Application" and pay a $15 duplication fee to your local DMV. You will receive the duplicate in about two weeks. However, performing escort responsibilities is risky without certification.  (Escort Vehicle Driver Certification Application)
